What is the Revenue Share Program ?

All Linspire builders benefit from our revenue share program - it's a great way for you to increase your margin on value-based Linspire systems. The revenue share program lets you earn commission from add-on purchases made by your customers through the Linspire website.

When a system you have built reaches the end user, and the end user registers or "lights up" through the Linspire website, all Linspire.com purchases made from that system will be tracked, and you will receive a percentage (at least 15%) of the gross profits from those purchases.

You can track your revenue share commissions online through the Linspire builder website.

Also, each month we announce featured hardware in the "Tipping Point" newsletter, our monthly channel partner update.

What kind of programs can be published?
Linspire is based on Debian Linux, so your software must be able to run under the Linux operating system.

Do my programs have to be in a particular format to be published?
Unless special arrangements have been made, Linspire only accepts software in the following formats for submission:
  • Debian (.deb) - This is our preferred format and provides the highest likelihood of your program being added to the Warehouse.
  • Tar or compressed archives of all files necessary to run your program (.tar, .gz, .bz2, .zip, etc.). If you don't know how to package your program up as a Debian (.deb) file, we can do this for you on our end, but because of the additional resources needed to publish your products, they must have higher value in other ways for us to accept them.

Do all programs submitted get Published to the Warehouse?
Not necessarily. Because we have limited resources to test and package programs for inclusion, we use the following criteria to decide if a program should be included in the Warehouse:
  • Stability. We try not to publish programs that are extremely unstable or will provide the user with a frustrating experience.
  • Safety. Obviously we do not want to include products containing viruses or which could in any way harm the user's computer or jeopardize their security.
  • Value. The price you charge for your commercial product must have substantial value for our users.
  • Packaging Requirements. Each program takes a different amount of time for us to test and package for delivery using CNR Technology. The more time a program requires, the more value we'll want it to provide to Linspire users. The more work you do on your end to deliver a "ready-to-go" package to us, the less time we'll need to invest, thus increasing the likelihood of us being able to include it. As mentioned earlier, Debian packages (.deb) properly built specifically for Linspire are the easiest for us to test and add to the Warehouse.

How long will it take before I know whether my program has been accepted?
You will usually have an answer back from us within one to two weeks.

How long does it take for it to appear in the Warehouse?
This depends on the complexity of the package, how much testing is required, and so on. Most programs are available in the Warehouse within 1 to 4 weeks after being approved and accepted.

Do I have to package up my program specifically for Linspire before submitting it?
As long as you have tested your program and you know it runs properly under Linspire, we can do any final "packaging" on our end so that your program can be included in the Warehouse and delivered via CNR Technology. As mentioned earlier, proper Debian packages (.deb) built specifically for Linspire are the easiest for us to test and add to the Warehouse.

Does Linspire ever modify my program?
We make the necessary changes to make your program deliverable via the CNR distribution system. Since we do not have access to the source code, if we need to make any additional changes we will contact you directly.

Does Linspire test my program?
Yes. However, most of our testing involves making sure your program installs properly using CNR Technology. You will be responsible to make sure your software runs properly under Linspire before you submit it. We recommend that you do ample testing beforehand, using a computer running a fresh installation of Linspire. We may also use a segment of our Insiders (known as "Thrillseekers") to help with the testing.

Where can I learn more or ask other questions I might have about the Publishing process?
Please visit http://support.linspire.com for any additional help you may need. Also, be sure and visit the Developer & Publisher Forum to share ideas with other developers and those publishing their software to the Warehouse.

What is Click-N-Buy?
Linspire's Click-N-Buy brings a new channel of commercial software delivery that has never been available to Linux users. This delivery method allows users to purchase software for their Linspire PCs from multiple commercial vendors with one click. Finding commercial software for Linux in the past has been quite a challenge. Buying and installing software has been time consuming and, for many, a difficult task. Now, locating the best of Linux is a breeze with Linspire's new Click-N-Buy commercial one-click delivery system.

After a consumer acknowledges that they want to purchase an application, they simply click once and the program is downloaded, configured and installed and their credit card is automatically billed.

How much can I sell my software for?
If you wish to charge for your software, YOU set the "wholesale" price you wish to be paid for each copy of your program that is sold in the Warehouse. (Most vendors set their wholesale price between 40% to 60% of their usual list price, but it is entirely up to you.) Linspire, based on your wholesale price, suggested list price, and other suggested pricing you provide, will set the purchase price to be charged to Warehouse buyers.

Can I change the pricing I charge or remove my programs once they have been placed in the Warehouse?
According to the Warehouse Agreement, you can change the pricing at anytime or remove programs from the Warehouse with 30-days notice.

Once our software is being distributed through the Click-N-Buy system, what sort of co-marketing opportunities with Linspire exist?
Linspire has the option of promoting software products through its normal communication channels, including but not limited to press releases, email newsletters, detailed product page listings (see example here), promotion on the Linspire web site, etc. If a software developer has additional co-marketing ideas, Linspire is certainly open to considering them.

Who creates the Product Page for my programs?
Linspire will create this page. You can provide links or email us with any special artwork, logos, screenshots, etc. that you'd like us to use.
